Earlier this week, Lily hosted a little Hygge/Winter Solstice/Christmas party with a few of her girlfriends. Since her birthday is in the summer and we're usually traveling, she's never had a proper birthday party, so while this wasn't celebrating her birthday, it was her first opportunity to host a bash and invite all of her little buddies over, so she took it verrrrry seriously.
Earlier in the day, Chloe and I foraged a few pine boughs and got everything ready. Making the cake and the pizza a few days earlier and having them in the freezer was a huge help. The morning of, I stopped at dollarama for a few craft supplies and dried some oranges for making ornaments.
I picked the girls up from school and we all walked over to our house. Since it was about to be dark by the time we got there, we lit a bunch of candles and sat down to some hot tea and earl grey cake with honey butter cream frosting. Hygge is all about being cozy in the cold dark winter, so this felt exactly right!
Then we did winter-y crafts and made Christmas tree ornaments and ate pizza for dinner. The girl's parents picked them up at 6pm and we gave them each a little candle as a parting gift. Brad took our younger two to the library for the duration of the party to keep things less hectic. Seven girls + Lily and I is enough for our little condo!
I really liked the idea of having a big 'just because' party with Lily's friends. Birthday parties can become a lot and expensive for those invited, so it was fun to have her friends over for a celebratory event with no strings attached. I also really wanted to make sure it was an after school party instead of a weekend - weekends are so sacred for us, and from what I hear, we aren't the only ones. With homework, swimming lessons, church, and family time, it's hard to fit anything else without being bogged down, so it was fun to have this little shin dig mid-week.
Many of these girls were also in Lily's kindergarten class and all of them will be in her class next year (as her school groups grade 1 and 2 together with the same kids and teacher), so I loved having a chance to get to know them better. I knew them all from the times I've been in Lily's class room but it's totally different having kids in your home. They were all so lovely and we had the best time! Happy Hygge!

This is such a sweet idea! Are you able to share the cake recipe?
ReplyDeleteThanks Katelin :) It's a basic cake recipe which UI've shared on here before (I think under "everyone's birthday cake" or something... except I added earl grey tea both liquid and the leaves! The icing looks grey but it's actually very pale purple with more blue than red which I just played with using basic food colouring :)
DeleteThat cake - Yum! What a great day for your little girl!
ReplyDeletethanks girl! I hope it was as amazing as I felt it was, for her :)
